Excessive Hair Growth
Many women—and certainly men as well—are bothered by (excessive) hair growth on their face or body. Regular shaving, epilation, or waxing can cause skin irritation and ingrown hairs. It’s also very time-consuming.
As a result, there is a very high demand for a truly effective treatment. Reducing unwanted hair growth using laser and IPL is one of the most commonly performed treatments worldwide.
Two Forms of Excessive Hair Growth
In addition to normal body hair, there are two forms of excessive hair growth: hypertrichosis and hirsutism. These conditions usually occur separately, but can also occur in combination.
Hypertrichosis is excessive hair growth in areas where some hair growth naturally occurs. Fine hairs may appear on the face, and the hairs on the arms often become longer and more numerous. The lower legs and torso are also usually more heavily hairy. This occurs in both men and women and begins during puberty.
Hirsutism
In hirsutism, women develop hair in areas where hair typically grows only on men. Thick, dark hair grows in areas such as the upper lip, cheeks, chin, neck, around the nipples, abdomen, groin, and even on the chest and back.
This condition is caused by the hair follicles being hypersensitive to normal levels of androgens (male hormones). Some women have elevated levels of this hormone in their blood.
Tobrix offers a solution for both of the conditions mentioned above. Click here to view our selection of lasers and IPL systems.
Laser hair removal is also sometimes called permanent hair removal; however, there is no guarantee that all hair will disappear completely. As a result, the term “permanent hair reduction” is used more frequently these days. The average reduction achieved is 80%. The remaining hairs often grow back significantly thinner and lighter, and this is usually no longer a problem.
Hair growth goes through three phases: the anagen (growth), catagen, and telogen phases. Hairs grow according to their own cycle, and only a portion of the hairs are in the growth phase. The laser is most effective during this anagen phase. This is because the hairs are still firmly anchored in the follicle and contain the most pigment.
Hair Removal Systems
Worldwide, in addition to the diode laser (810 nm), the Alexandrite laser (755 nm) is the gold standard for reducing unwanted hair growth. In addition, the Nd:YAG (1064 nm) is used for darker skin types, and IPL (±550–1200 nm) for lighter skin types.
However, laser treatments are still preferred over IPL. This is because lasers produce faster results and offer significantly better long-term effects.
Tobrix Product Line
Most of the lasers in the Tobrix product line feature both an Alexandrite and an Nd:YAG laser source within a single system.
A laser with a Alexandrite 755 nm This laser source is ideal for skin types I–III due to its high absorption in melanin. The laser light is absorbed by the pigment cells in the hairs and transfers the energy to the hair follicle. This energy is converted into heat there, thereby damaging the hair follicle and the hair shaft. Because of the superior absorption in melanin, treatments can be performed at relatively low fluences, making treatments with this wavelength less painful.
The Alexandrite laser is highly effective at damaging the hair follicle to such an extent that hair growth is no longer possible in the long term. Today, large spot sizes are also available for this wavelength. This means that treating larger areas takes less time.
In addition to hair removal, this wavelength is also highly effective for treating pigmentation disorders.
The Nd:YAG 1064 nm laser is used more frequently for darker skin types. This vascular laser does not target the melanin in the hair, but instead damages the hair’s nutrient supply and blood flow. The blood vessels are damaged to such an extent that the hair follicle dies, eventually preventing any further hair growth from that follicle.
In addition to hair removal, the Nd:YAG laser can also be used to treat fungal nail infections (onychomycosis) and various vascular conditions, such as spider veins and rosacea.
Quanta System’s systems are capable of combining the Alexandrite and Nd:YAG lasers in a simultaneous or sequential pulse. This is the case with the Duetto MT EVO, Thunder MT and Suprema 4V MT/Suprema Duetto. In this process, both wavelengths are pulsed simultaneously or immediately one after the other. The advantage of this is that it targets both the melanin in the hair and the surrounding tissue/blood supply.
In addition, treatment with the Nd:YAG laser alone can be quite painful. Combining both wavelengths ensures that a lower energy level can be set, which makes the treatment less painful.
Combining both wavelengths is often used for skin types III and IV and/or areas where hair is less responsive to a single wavelength. Depending on the amount of melanin in the skin, you can adjust the energy of the Alexandrite laser to a higher or lower setting. When removing red blood vessels, which are more difficult to treat with the Nd:YAG laser alone, this combination can be an effective solution.
FAQs
Laser hair removal using Alexandrite and Nd:YAG lasers works on the principle of selective thermolysis, also known as selective light absorption. The laser light is absorbed by the pigment, also known as melanin, in the hair structure. This light energy is then converted back into heat, which damages the hair follicle and reduces hair growth .
Alexandrite primarily targets the melanin in the hair follicle, while the Nd:YAG targets the blood supply to the hair follicle.
The ability to use Quanta Mixed-Technology® (as in the Suprema 4V MT or Duetto MT EVO) makes this approach even more effective.
The main difference is the way the light is emitted. Both techniques use heat only when laser will be used from a specific wavelength (monochromatic), while IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) works with a wider spectrum to light (polychromatic). Lasers As a result, they provide more targeted energy delivery and can be tailored very specifically to, for example , skin type, hair color , and the indication for treatment.
In general, it can be said that laser treatment is more effective, faster, and safer for hair removal.
